The Open Climate Campaign - why we need open access to climate science
Climate change, and the resulting harm to our global biodiversity, is one of the world's most pressing challenges. While the existence of climate change and the resulting loss of biodiversity is certain, knowledge and data about these global challenges and the possible solutions, mitigations and actions to tackle them is too often not publicly accessible. For example, only 47% of research articles on climate change are open. If we are to enable solutions to climate change, the knowledge about it must be open. Recognizing the need for open access in climate science, the Open Climate Campaign is working to make the open sharing of research the norm in climate science through advocacy, direct work with funders of climate research, its international focus and by opening foundational climate change publications.
The following questions will be discussed:
- Why is making climate change research open particularly important?
- What are some new tools or initiatives you can employ at your institution to promote open practices?
- How can you get involved in the open climate campaign?
The talk was given by Monica Granados and Iryna Kuchma.
While working on her PhD, Monica Granados discovered incentives in academia promote practices that make knowledge less accessible and has since devoted her career to working in the open science space in pursuit of making knowledge more equitable and accessible. She has worked on open knowledge initiatives with Mozilla, PREreview and the Government of Canada. Monica is now an Assistant Director at Creative Commons working on the Open Climate Campaign promoting open access of climate and biodiversity research.
Iryna Kuchma is the EIFL Open Access Programme Manager. Working in collaboration with library consortia in over 50 countries in Africa, Asia and Europe, Iryna Kuchma advocates for open access to research results, facilitates the development and implementation of open science policies and infrastructures, and provides support and training. Iryna is the Open Climate Campaign project partner.
