Aims and Content The number of consortial Open Access funding solutions is steadily increasing in Germany as well as internationally. Since spring 2025, members of consortial-services have been meeting online at regular intervals to exchange experiences, evaluate new market developments, and support wider adoption of these models. These digital meetings focus in particular on aspects such as standards, funding modalities, workflows for organising financial contributions, recruiting and supporting consortium members, advising editors and publishers, future planning, and opportunities for collaboration. The focus group understands consortial Open Access funding solutions as models in which neither readers nor authors (nor their affiliated institutions) incur costs for publications (e.g. Article Processing Charges or Book Processing Charges), in which funders voluntarily and collectively commit to covering the costs of publication, in which publicly funded institutions or non-profit actors without commercial interests are responsible for the organisational framework, and which follow or closely align with the principles of Diamond Open Access. Organisational Matters The focus group is coordinated by Fabian Hennig , Ronja Kuhlwilm , and Sebastian Schaarschmidt . Meetings of the focus group generally take place every three months. They are designed as working sessions for publicly funded institutions or non-profit actors without commercial interests who already operate consortial Open Access programmes or are close to launching such initiatives. Background The establishment of institutional open access publication platforms was an initial reason to develop advisory services on the topic of publishing at libraries and the starting point for general publication advice that goes beyond this. This expansion of the subject area also brings new challenges for the advisors, such as identifying new relevant topics and preparing them for advisory practice. Questions also arise with regard to the development of the competences of publication consultants. The focus group emerged from the workshop ‘Promoting exchange: Initial workshop on the establishment of a networking platform for publication advisors’ as part of the Open Access Days 2024 in Cologne. The scholar-led.network focus group is intended to provide a venue for self-published journals and editor collectives of fee-free publication projects that are independent of major publishers. Inspired by initiatives in other countries ( Radical Open Access Collective , ScholarLed , etc.), the focus group will define common interests for scholarly-led publication projects operating in German-speaking countries and explore possible fields of action and forms of interest representation. The focus group is to take on further tasks in addition to networking. In addition to the development of a manifesto (German), which has already taken place, it would be conceivable, for example, to write a declaration on the founding of an association of journals to form a collective, to initiate joint funding applications or to prepare internal working structures on the basis of cooperative models. The idea of the Scholar-Led focus group builds on networking work in the context of (third-party funded) OA research projects ( InnOAccess , Open Gender Platform ) and ties in with discussions held at community meetings ( Open Access Days ) and in the context of the respective institutions. In the daily work with open access, communication is an essential part of the job. One challenge is to address and reach many different target groups. This involves not only addressing specialist communities, but also contacting the political level and using various media channels. This requires basic communication skills as well as strategic know-how. The focus group aims to give all interested parties a space for exchange and knowledge needs on the overarching topic of communication, including the following topics: basic knowledge / training needs concrete actions on target group communication The focus group meetings take place online here in the room .
