Focus Group "Publication advice"
Background The establishment of institutional open access publication platforms was an initial reason to develop advisory services on the topic of publishing at libraries and the starting point for general publication advice that goes beyond this. This expansion of the subject area also brings new challenges for the advisors, such as identifying new relevant topics and preparing them for advisory practice. Questions also arise with regard to the development of the competences of publication consultants. The focus group emerged from the workshop ‘Promoting exchange: Initial workshop on the establishment of a networking platform for publication advisors’ as part of the Open Access Days 2024 in Cologne. You can find the slides from this workshop on Zenodo: zenodo.org/doi/10.5281/zenodo.13833192 Aims and Content The focus group Publication Advice aims to promote the exchange and networking of people throughout the DACH region who are active in the context of publication advice and research support. The following topics, among others, can be discussed in the focus group: Further development of the range of topics and advisory services Best practice examples Acquiring skills for work in publication counselling Creation and exchange of materials Opportunities for further training Exchange of experience: What works, what doesn't? Joint events for researchers Job profile ‘Publication consultant’ In virtual meetings, practical presentations are planned on topics in publication counselling and best practice examples from institutions. Furthermore, an exchange of experiences will be facilitated through discussions. A first online meeting is planned for January 2025, more detailed information and an invitation to participate will follow in good time via mailing lists. We look forward to hearing from you in advance as well as suggestions for specific presentation topics or formats. Focus Group "scholar-led.network"
The scholar-led.network focus group is intended to provide a venue for self-published journals and editor collectives of fee-free publication projects that are independent of major publishers. Inspired by initiatives in other countries ( Radical Open Access Collective , ScholarLed , etc.), the focus group will define common interests for scholarly-led publication projects operating in German-speaking countries and explore possible fields of action and forms of interest representation. The focus group is to take on further tasks in addition to networking. In addition to the development of a manifesto (German), which has already taken place, it would be conceivable, for example, to write a declaration on the founding of an association of journals to form a collective, to initiate joint funding applications or to prepare internal working structures on the basis of cooperative models. The idea of the Scholar-Led focus group builds on networking work in the context of (third-party funded) OA research projects ( InnOAccess , Open Gender Platform ) and ties in with discussions held at community meetings ( Open Access Days ) and in the context of the respective institutions. Focus Group on Open Access Books
Background The implementation of Open Access in the field of book publications has gained momentum in recent years. Some universities and scientific institutions have already established support measures for Open Access books. There are a number of topics where a dialogue at the interface between the publishing world and the needs of libraries and researchers can be deepened. Cooperation with publishers is particularly important in the humanities and social sciences. Aims The focus group "Open Access Books" builds on the existing network of people in Berlin who are involved in the field of Open Access and who work at university libraries as well as for small and medium-sized publishers. The group continues the exchange started at the end of 2019 in the context of the 2nd Berlin Round Table. The focus will be on topics such as publishing agreements and their conformity with OA principles (open licensing, granting of rights of use, etc.). The topic around OA books also moves other networks, so the focus group is open to other people who are willing to participate. The exchange with other initiatives such as ENABLE! Community , Allianz-AG Scientific Publication System is being taken into consideration. Further meetings of the focus group are currently being planned.
