This year's Open Access Days are entitled “Mission Accomplished? Open Access and the Re/pro/duction of Inequality in Academic Publishing” in Konstanz. The program committee is calling for suitable contributions. Proposals for presentations and workshops can be submitted until April 6, 2025. The deadline for posters and contributions for the Tool Marketplace is June 27, 2024.
Analyzing inequalities, identifying solutions
The Open Access movement aimed to facilitate access to scientific knowledge for all. However, 20 years after the Berlin Declaration, barriers still exist - and new ones have been added. High publication fees make it difficult for researchers with limited resources to participate, while large publishers continue to expand their market power through transformation agreements such as DEAL. Linguistic dominance - especially of English -, disciplinary differences and unequal infrastructures also contribute to the fact that not everyone benefits equally from Open Access.
The program committee invites contributions that analyze these inequalities or identify solutions. Submissions are particularly welcome on:
- Diamond Open Access: How can funding be secured in the long term?
- Artificial intelligence everywhere: what opportunities and risks arise?
- Open Access as an organizational and institutional challenge: How are structures and workflows changing?
Interactive formats are particularly welcome.
