The study "Open science-related policies in Europe" has examined the open science policies in seven European countries, including Germany. For this purpose, the study authors collected all relevant open science (OS) policy documents and conducted a thematic analysis to identify OS policies for each country. Finally, forty-six policy documents extracted up to December 2020 were thematically analysed through a qualitative-inductive case study. Based on their findings, the study authors formulate, among other things, the recommendation for international practical cooperation in the field of open science, especially on the topics of science communication and popularisation.

Recommendations for action against gaps in OS policies

In order to close the gaps in the open science policies of the countries identified in the study, the authors propose various measures: Among other things, research processes and results would have to be made more transparent and accessible in order to improve the uptake of results by policy-makers and society in general. The uptake of research results, communication and interaction between researchers and policy makers would have to be improved. It is important to promote local scientific expertise from OS so that it can participate in relevant political decisions. Last but not least, scientists need to improve their communication skills to bridge the gap between facts and policy.

The study Moradi, S., & Abdi, S. (2023). Open science-related policies in Europe. Science and Public Policy, scac082. https://doi.org/10.1093/scipol/scac082 was published in March 2023 open access in Science and Public Policy.
