The European Knowledge Exchange (KE) initiative is launching a new project on the role of alternative publication platforms in academic communication. The aim is to develop well-founded recommendations for researchers, funding organizations and institutions that want to publish outside of traditional publishing structures.
Focus on the diversity of alternative models
Alternative platforms such as Octopus, F1000Research, ResearchEquals and PeerCommunity Journal differ in features such as open peer review procedures, publication of preprints, transparent processes and free access to content. This diversity is to be systematically analyzed - with a focus on benefits, challenges and success factors.
European team with broad expertise
The project builds on an earlier scoping report and is supported by an international task and finish group. The working group is gradually publishing its findings via the Oktopus platform, which relies on micro-publications. Participants include the German Research Foundation (DFG), the German National Library of Science and Technology (TIB), the Danish e-infrastructure Consortium (DeiC), the Université de Lorraine, Research Consulting and the University of Sheffield. The team is complemented by other experts from partner institutions within and outside Europe.
Participation desired
A final report is planned for 2026 KE invites researchers, funders and platform operators to participate. Further information and contact details can be found on the KE website.
