The German research organisation Max Planck Society (MPG), represented by the Max Planck Digital Library (MPDL), and the scientific publishing group Springer Nature have signed an open access agreement: In future, researchers at 86 MPG institutes will be able to publish their scientific work with Springer Nature in open access (OA). The agreement covers all of the publisher's book brands.

The three-year agreement comes into effect retroactively from 1 January 2022 and allows authors to receive a discount on the Book Publishing Charge (BPC) for OA book publication. According to the MPDL, it will cover a significant part of the costs of publishing OA books. This would enable more authors to publish their work freely accessible. At the same time, the visibility and impact of the associated research is increased, as readers worldwide can freely access the book content via SpringerLink.
