DEAL and Springer Nature extend open access agreement until 2023

The scientific publisher Springer Nature and the DEAL project are extending their open access transformation agreement from 2019 until at least the end of 2023. The publisher justified the extension by citing the success of the agreement: in 2021, it enabled more than 16,000 new research articles to be published in OA, which is 13 per cent more than in the previous year. 97 per cent of the authors* at the universities and institutions in Germany that are members of the DEAL agreement have published their articles in OA. Due to the agreement between DEAL and Springer Nature, they did not have to pay a publication fee (APC - Article Processing Charge) for this. The worldwide downloads of Springer Nature content written by German authors increased by 185 percent in 2021. In addition, the publisher has recorded a 12 percent increase in the number of institutions affiliated with the contract, to 486.
