Diamond OA as an alternative": Fair Open Access Funds - What libraries can do to promote Diamond Open Access Wednesday, 6 November 2024 | 1pm - 2:15 pm (CET) | online | The event was held in English. As both subscription and publication costs for scientific journals and monographs continue to rise, there is much discussion about Diamond Open Access as an alternative funding option. But how can academic libraries support Diamond Open Access? One approach is to create seperate publication funds for Fair Open Acccess. In Fair Open Access, the focus is primarily on supporting publishing infrastructures and academic initiatives in order to strenghten scholar-led publishing. The Fair Open Access Alliance (FOAA) has outlined five key principles that journals must adhere to in order to qualify as Fair Open Access. These include: 1) being led by the academic community, 2) ensuring that authors retain the copyright to their work, 3) providing immediate and unrestricted Open Access to all content, 4) separating submission and publication from mandatory fees, and 5) maintaining low, transparent, and proportionate costs for any necessary fees. To support Fair Open Access initiatives, some university libraries allocate dedicated financial resources through Fair Open Access funds: Demmy Verbeke introduced the KU Leuven Fund for Fair Open Access , which is dedicated to promoting a cost-effective and sustainable implementation of Open Science. The fund supports the development of new publishing models, as well as Open Science initiatives and infrastructures, with the goal of steering away from expensive, for-profit business models and empowering scholars to regain control of the publishing process. Michaela Voigt talked about the Technische Universität (TU) Berlin and its University Library which has launched a Fair Open Access Fund in 2024 to further expand the existing support for Open Access. The focus of Fair OA funding is on publication or infrastructure projects that strengthen sustainable and open publication structures, promote diversity instead of monopolism and see cooperation as a driving force for innovation. At the event, we presented these best practices and discussed the following topics: What considerations preceded the establishment of a Fair OA Fund at KU Leuven and TU Berlin and what criteria do they use as a guide? Diamond OA as an alternative": International Insights into Diamond Open Access - How Does DOA Work Across Borders? Thursday, 5 December 2024 | 2pm - 3.30 pm (CET) | online | The event was held in English. Diamond Open Access (DOA) aims to address inequities in scholarly publishing through several key mechanisms. By eliminating publication fees, it seeks to reduce elitist selection practices and to mitigate both institution-specific and international disparities in access to publishing opportunities. As a global movement, DOA inherently fosters international connections: digital publications are accessible worldwide and it allows researchers to share their work independent of their home institutions. Various international initiatives are currently driving the growth of DOA, providing valuable insights into the diverse global landscape of the DOA movement. Yet challenges remain. What obstacles hinder international collaboration in this field? What kind of infrastructure would best support effective global cooperation? And what lessons can we learn from existing DOA experiences? This event explored these questions, shedding light on the possibilities and pathways for a more internationally inclusive and accessible future in scholarly publishing. PLATO, KOALA und CODRIA: Die Diamond-Open-Access-Landschaft und Ansätze konsortialer Finanzierung in Deutschland und der Schweiz Die Veranstaltung fand am 20.9.2023 zwischen 10-12 Uhr virtuell statt. Referent*innen: Dr. Niels Taubert (Universität Bielefeld, Projekt CODRIA) Dr. Daniela Hahn (Universität Zürich, Projekt PLATO): Dr. Alexander Pöche (TIB Hannover, als Leiter des Referats Lizenzen u.a. beteiligt am Projekt KOALA) Abstract Gebührenfreies Open Access, so genanntes Diamond oder auch Platinum Open Access, ermöglicht Open-Access-Publizieren ohne Article/Book Processing Charges (APCs/BPCs). Anfallende Kosten werden über Mitgliedschaften oder andere gemeinschaftliche bzw. konsortiale Finanzierungsmodelle gedeckt. In jüngster Zeit wird Diamond Open Access als vielversprechende Alternative zu APC/BPC-basiertem Open Access diskutiert. Auf europäischer Ebene hat die Diamond-Open-Access-Studie eine Bestandsaufnahme von Open-Access Zeitschriften und Plattformen durchgeführt und deren Finanzierungsformen, technische und organisatorische Herausforderungen sowie Potenziale untersucht. In Deutschland und der Schweiz haben die Projekte CODRIA (Community-Driven Open Access Journals zwischen wissenschaftlichen und ressourcenbezogenen Anforderungen) und PLATO (Platinum Open Access Funding) die Diamond-Open-Access-Landschaft untersucht. KOALA (Konsortiale Open Access Lösungen aufbauen) hat zudem ein konsortiales Modell entwickelt, in dem die beteiligten Einrichtungen (Hochschulbibliotheken) Open Access-Zeitschriften und -Buchreihen finanzieren. Das Projekt PLATO plant im zweiten Schritt die Entwcklung eines Modells, mit dem das Erscheinen von Diamond-Open-Access-Zeitschriften in Zukunft verbessert, unterstützt und finanziert werden kann. Vor diesem Hintergrund stellten sich zahlreiche Fragen, darunter: Welche Herausforderungen stellen sich für Diamond-Open-Access-Publikationen und welche Chancen bieten gemeinschaftliche Finanzierungsmodelle? Wie kann eine gemeinschaftliche Finanzierung organisiert und verwaltet werden? Welche Aufgaben stellen sich bei der Verwaltung von Konsortien und wie können diese von wissenschaftlichen Infrastruktureinrichtungen bewältigt werden? Wie können Einrichtungen - nicht zuletzt vor dem Hintergrund von Budgetkürzungen - von einer Beteiligung an einer gemeinschaftlichen Finanzierung überzeugt werden? Ausgehend von diesen Fragen und den Erfahrungen und Forschungsergebnissen aus den Projekten PLATO, KOALA und CODRIA, wurden in der Veranstaltung die Handlungsmöglichkeiten wissenschaftlicher Bibliotheken zur Unterstützung von Diamond-Open-Access-Zeitschriften diskutiert....

Zeit: 29.10.2020, 14.00 bis 15.00 Uhr Referent*in: Johan Rooryck, Universität Leiden und cOAlition S Plan S and Funding – what is going to change? The next Open Access Talk " Plan S and funding - what is going to change? " will take place on 29th October 2020 from 2-3 pm (CET). Plan S is an ambitious project of 23 funders worldwide to accelerate the transition of academic publishing towards full and immediate Open Access. Johan Rooryck, Professor at Leiden University and Executive Director of cOAlition S , will briefly outline the rationale for the principles of Plan S. Beyond that, he will discuss its implementation for all grants awarded by cOAlition S funders from 1 January 2021, including the Horizon Europe framework . In his talk, Johan Rooryck will cover the following questions: Which conditions do you need to fulfil to publish in a journal of your choice under Plan S? What can the newly developed Journal Checker Tool do for you? How does the recent Rights Retention Strategy help you to keep the rights to your Author Accepted Manuscript? In addition, Johan Rooryck will mention a number of other projects initiated by cOAlition S, such as the Price Transparency Framework to ensure that prices for publishing services become more transparent and fair or the commission of a study to identify concrete funding mechanisms to support and strengthen diamond journals and their platforms. Open Access and share your knowledge! Publishing in African Studies (English only) Whether it is a paper, a book or a dissertation - the possibilities for open access publishing are as broad as African Studies itself. The workshop aims to provide information on the possibilities of transferring one's own publications to open access and making them available online in a barrier-free, cost-free and legally secure manner. Together we will look at different ways of open access publishing, highlighting the opportunities, but also the challenges of the publishing process. What challenges do authors face as they work towards publishing their research? What reservations do authors hold toward open access publishing and how can they be supported in the publishing process? What opportunities do open access publications offer? Prof. Dr. Paul Klimpel ( iRights.Law ) will explain the rights of authors to transfer their publications to open access at a later date (Green Open Access). As part of open-access.network, we have designed a series of online courses on the topic of open access in German and English. The self-study courses are provided via the TOERN (TIB) platform. After completing a course, participants can receive a PDF certificate. To do so, they must create an account and enrol in a course. Open Access auf Landesebene fördern: Wege zum landesweiten Publikationsfonds Der Online-Workshop wurde am 29. April 2025, 13:00 bis 14:45 Uhr im Rahmen des BMBF-geförderten Projekts open-access.network vom Open Research Office Berlin veranstaltet. Die Veranstaltung ist Teil der Workshopreihe "Regionale Vernetzung". Abstract Im gemeinsamen Leitlinien-Papier bekennen sich Bund und Länder dazu, "Open Access dauerhaft, verlässlich und angemessen zu unterstützen". Performing Open Access The online workshop "Performing Open Access" will take place on 13 December 2021 from 10:00 to 16:00. It is organised jointly by the Berlin Open Access Office and the University Library of the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK) as part of the BMBF-funded project open-access.network. Open Access in the performing arts means taking into account diverse publication formats as well as the diversity of creative professionals. Scholars, artistic-scientific practitioners and artists create texts, images, visual and audio recordings, productions, scripts and much more. Thus, Open Access to artistic content and especially in the performing arts encompasses text- and non-text-based publications and reflects the diversity of content in a diversity of challenges. Together we will look at the ways of publishing, the opportunities, but also the challenges of the publishing process. In two thematic blocks, we would like to facilitate an opportunity for exchange between academics, artistic-scientific practitioners and artists on the topic of Open Access. Jason Corff (Hochschulübergreifendes Zentrum Tanz) and Dr. Anna Luise Kiss (Hochschule für Schauspielkunst Ernst Busch) will provide insights into their experiences with the topic of Open Access. Practical feasibility and support services will be presented and the opportunity to network will be offered. What does it mean to publish in Open Access in the performing arts?
