The Max Planck Digital Library (MPDL) has published a study on the transformation of the subscription-based system of scholarly publishing to open access (OA). Entitled "Disrupting the subscription journal's business model for the necessary large-scale transformation to open access", the paper concludes that library funds that have hitherto been used to acquire journal licences and subscriptions suffice to fund OA publication fees. Using sample calculations at global, national, and institutional level, the study shows that the cost-neutral conversion of the scholarly publishing system to OA is possible.
