"Plan S is extreme": immediate and complete Open Access

Since many scientists are not allowed by their publishers to publish their author accepted manuscript (AAM) under CC-BY licensing and without embargo periods, cOAlition S has developed a Rights Retention Strategy. This is intended to enable its funded researchers to publish in the journal of their choice - including subscription journals - and to offer Open Access in accordance with Plan S. In addition to the WHO and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the European Commission is one of the funding agencies implementing the strategy within the framework of its Horizon 2020 programme.

The scientific magazine "Spektrum" reports on the planned implementation of Plan S on 1 January 2021 and also writes about questions that are still open: "Will authors really deposit their AAM immediately and how will this be surveyed and enforced in a timely manner?
