On the topic of financing scientific publications, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) published a guest article by the philosopher and IT entrepreneur Jörg Phil Friedrich on 31 August 2020. In his article, he also discusses the organisational contribution of publishers to quality assurance in scientific journals and the advantages and disadvantages of the Open Access business model.
The financing of Open Access publications is based on a business model in which authors or institutions pay for the publication of research articles. Reading these articles is free of charge. In the case of renowned specialist journals, the publication costs often mount up to several thousand euros. In return, the publishers ensure the quality of the articles through a peer review process. However, smaller institutes or independent researchers may encounter financial limits.
