OA2020 initiative gets underway

Veröffentlicht am

An initiative for the transition of scholarly publishing to Open Access got underway yesterday under the title "Open Access 2020". With this initiative, international science organisations are calling for the large-scale transition of scholarly journals to open access. Special responsibility in this regard is accorded to research libraries. The aim of the initiative is to transform the majority of today's scholarly journals from subscription to OA publishing. The initiative borrows from the SCOAP³ project (to transform the journals in the field of high energy physics to OA) and from analyses of the financial volume of today's subscription market produced by the Max Planck Digital Library.
An essential feature of the initiative is its orientation towards transforming the status quo with the help of the current stakeholders (incl. publishers), with the current financial resources, and with transparency of costs and procedures.
The initiative is situated in the context of the Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities and is one outcome of the last Berlin Conference, which was hosted by the Max Planck Society, who also announced the launch of the initiative.
Initial signatories from Germany include the German Research Foundation (DFG), the German Rectors' Conference (HRK), the German Council of Science and Humanities (WR), the Max Planck Society (MPG), the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft, the Helmholtz Association, the Leibniz Association, the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. The full list of signatories can be found here.
