With the new guideline for funding projects to accelerate the transformation to Open Access, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) aims to further strengthen the establishment of Open Access as a standard in scientific publishing and to accelerate the Open Access transformation within the framework of a national Open Access strategy.
To this end, the Ministry has set up three thematic areas for different funding priorities:
- The conversion of publication series and several individual publications to Open Access
- The development of technical success models in small and medium-sized publishing houses and university publishing houses
- Innovative projects that generally strengthen the Open Access publishing system in Germany
Project proposals can be submitted until 7 August 2020. As a rule, the funding amount is 300,000 euros for the entire project duration of a maximum of 24 months. The project is scheduled to start on 1 February 2021. Universities, non-university research institutions, small and medium-sized companies (e.g. publishing houses) as well as foundations and non-profit associations are entitled to apply for funding.
