Keeping an eye on the open access transition of hybrid journals

Veröffentlicht am

The Hybrid Open Access Dashboard (HOAD) is now available in live operation after a beta phase. The open source tool analyses the effectiveness of transformation contracts with regard to the conversion of hybrid journals to full open access. It accesses open data from Crossref, OpenAlex and the Journal Checker Tool from cOAlition S and is designed to help libraries, publishers and other stakeholders track and evaluate the progress of open access transition based on open data. HOAD was developed at the Göttingen State and University Library (SUB) and funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).

What does HOAD offer?

HOAD displays the status of over 12,500 hybrid journals included in over 400 transformative agreements in interactive charts and tables. Among other things, users can compare the global hybrid journal landscape with the situation in Germany since 2017. In addition, the hybrid journal portfolios of selected publishers can be analysed. Furthermore, the tool offers the possibility to observe the development of hybrid OA in the context of Creative Commons licences over time and to compare the licence types offered by the publishers. Among other things, it turns out that Springer Nature's journals predominantly use the CC BY licence, while the hybrid journals of Elsevier and Wiley still use the more restrictive CC BY-NC-ND licence for a considerable proportion of articles. Other features are the analysis of the different use of open access in different countries or the evaluation of the availability of open access metadata at publishers. The latter should help library consortia to negotiate more free metadata in transformation agreements.
