In June, the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) released funding of around 63 million US dollars for the development of infrastructure to make research results available nationwide in green open access. The ministry had already announced in February that researchers who receive state funding will have to make their research freely accessible in institutional repositories from April 2025. This makes Japan one of the first countries in the world to implement a nationwide open access strategy.
