The members of the editorial board of the hybrid journal The Journal of Political Philosophy (JPP), published by Wiley, have all resigned. They subsequently founded the journal Political Philosophy (PP), which is published via the Open Library of Humanities at the University of London in the diamond open access model.
Quantity versus quality
According to reports on the Daily Nous platform, this was preceded by disputes between the publisher Wiley and the former editor-in-chief of JPP: Wiley is said to have put pressure on the journal to publish more articles in view of open access agreements, which generate high revenues for the publisher per article. The conflict provisionally led to the dismissal of the editor, who is said to have refused to give in to the publisher's pressure as he was concerned about the journal's quality standards and reputation.
Protest against excessive fees
In other cases, disputes between academic publishers and members of editorial boards have led to resignations and the founding of new journals. In the recent past, editorial boards have protested against excessively high publication fees (article processing charges - APC). open-access.network reported on incidents at Elsevier and Taylor & Francis in 2023, among others.
