The DEAL consortium draws a positive balance of its first contract phase with the publishers Wiley and Springer Nature. The progress and results from 2019 to 2023 are presented in a newly published infographic brochure. According to the authors, the publication, which is available online in German and English, provides an insight into the impact of the DEAL contracts on the visibility and reach of German research and on the transformation towards a more sustainable publication system. One key finding: 97 per cent of the more than 105,000 publications from German research institutions during this period were published in open access. This means that two thirds of research results from Germany are now freely accessible worldwide. Those responsible see this as a significant increase compared to the 30 per cent before the DEAL initiative. According to the brochure, DEAL has not only improved access to scientific journals for participating institutions, but has also reduced the overall costs of scientific publications.
