Austrian Science Fund (FWF) issues new guidelines for stand-alone publications

The Austrian Science Fund (FWF) has revised its guidelines for the funding of stand-alone publications. The new application guidelines for the FWF's Stand-Alone Publication funding programme came into force on 1 December 2011. In fundamentally revising its stand-alone publication funding policy, the FWF has responded to current developments in and demands on scientific communication.
In future, the FWF will award lump-sum grants to cover production costs, the costs of simultaneous open-access publication, editing, foreign-language editing, or translation, thereby enhancing publication quality and ensuring the broader dissemination of Austrian research results. The FWF's Translation and Foreign-Language Editing funding programme has been integrated into the new Stand-Alone Publications programme.

Moreover, from now on the FWF will provide an additional lump-sum grant of 2,000 euros to publishers who conduct their own peer reviews for the selection of publications and make these reviews available to the FWF as a basis for its funding decisions. In such cases, the time needed for the FWF to process a funding application will be reduced to ca. 2 months.
All applications submitted to the FWF after 1 December 2011 must be made on the basis of the new guidelines.
