The initiative cOAlition S has presented the proposal "Towards Responsible Publishing", in which the authors argue in favour of a community-based scholarly communication system. Responsible publishing should be more effective, more affordable and fairer and address current shortcomings in the publication system of scientific journals - such as the delayed publication of research results and the increase in publication costs. cOAlition S offers researchers and other stakeholders the opportunity to contribute to the further development of the proposal through a survey.
Two key concepts for responsible publishing
The proposal recognises two key concepts as the basis for responsible publishing: Firstly, researchers in a scholar-led publishing system should decide for themselves what and when to publish. Secondly, the basic idea of the Plan S initiative to make all research results openly accessible should be expanded: According to the authors, the complete data set, which includes all steps related to the publication process such as previous article versions and feedback from peer review, should be made freely accessible in advance.
