The European Commission has launched a call for evidence to involve researchers and citizens in shaping the future European Research Area Act (ERA Act). The consultation phase will run until 10 September 2025. The aim is to gather feedback before a twelve-week public hearing begins on the EU platform Have your Say in the autumn. The Commission emphasises that the success of the ERA Act depends on broad participation.
Securing scientific freedom
From 2026, the ERA Act is intended to create the legal basis for a deepened European Research Area (ERA) – a kind of internal market for research and innovation in which knowledge, researchers and technologies can circulate freely. It aims to integrate national research and innovation policies more closely, reduce inequalities between member states and safeguard values such as scientific freedom and gender equality.
