A recent study by Teplitskiy, Lu & Duede concludes that Open Access is a more efficient dissemination strategy for scientific works than Closed Access, because it reaches not only scientists but also a broad public. The authors investigated how often articles from individual scientific journals are cited in Wikipedia. The result was that Open Access journals are more likely to be cited in Wikipedia than closed access journals with a probability of 47%.
