Report of the first transformation workshop of the National Contact Point Open Access OA2020-DE in Bielefeld
The first transformation workshop for heads of acquisition at university libraries took place on 19 and 20 April 2018 in Bielefeld. At the workshop, which was organised by the National Contact Point Open Access OA2020-DE, the participants discussed the "collection of cost and publication data at a university" and were informed about the financeability of open access transformation at national and international level and about alternative publishing models for open access journals and monographs, such as  the Open Library of Humanities and the Fair Open Access Alliance.

One key finding of the workshop was that university libraries' acquisition budgets are being increasingly used also to fund open access publications. The libraries are actively contributing to the creation of publications and are acquiring a new, visible role in the scholarly publishing system. The existing open access publishing funds can thus be used not only to finance payment of article processing charges in the natural sciences but also to fund monographs, to encourage the open access publishing behaviour of scholars in the humanities and the social sciences, or to support open access infrastructures.
