Negotiations between swissuniversities and the publisher Wiley ended on 31 March 2025 without agreement. As a result, Wiley has blocked access to journal issues from 2025. In addition, researchers in Switzerland will no longer be able to publish open access with Wiley under the previous read-and-publish agreement.
Prices per article too high
According to a statement from swissuniversities, the background to the failed negotiations is Wiley's price offer. The costs per article are significantly higher than in other European countries. swissuniversities emphasises that Swiss universities are striving for sustainable financing of scientific publishing and want to secure appropriate prices.
Recommendations for researchers in Switzerland
The Delegation Open Science (DelOS) of swissuniversities has published recommendations for action, including avoiding Wiley as a publication venue and making research texts available under Green Open Access. In addition, scientists should critically scrutinise review and editing activities for the publisher.
