Gates Foundation adopts Open Access policy

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, one of the largest research funders in the world, has adopted an Open Access policy that will become effective as of 1 January 2015. The policy covers both publications and research data generated by research funded in whole or in part by the foundation. During a two-year transition period, publishers will be permitted to apply a 12-month embargo on the accessiblity of publications and their underlying data sets.
